I feel like life has been moving very fast since I last sat down here to write something. In the past 8 months I’ve led the winding down of a charity, the moving of its operations to a new centre, the winding up of a new charity, the expansion of services by 65 hours and the start of a major partnership with another national charity. In that time I also bought my first home, moved and started working on a MEd via distance education. On top of that I still have had my hands in a few other community projects that I love and support… but by way of excuses, that is where my time has gone. But I miss the reflective time that writing gives me; a space to ask questions not really expect any answers.
Now that we have moved from the city centre out to the sticks, we have a bit more space. We have taken up the hobby of keeping chickens. Now, I lived on a farm for 4 years as a child (my parents did it as a bit of a mid-life experiment) and my wife grew up in a rural village with a fairly big garden. That being said, neither of us had the expertise to keep chickens but after consulting friends and family, we set forth and bought two hens. Although we are still learning (and they aren’t laying at full steam yet) we seem to have got the hang of it. We’ve also decided to turn over 50% of our garden to agriculture. My wife has been planning this for some time, and there is a very good chance we can live off of our garden (veg/eggs) for a couple months this summer.
Over the next year, I’ll try and keep a record of what we do, what we learn, and what we fail at. I will also try to get through my ‘parts of the answer’ but I’m sure that is a life aspiration to finish…
